MassHousing Awards $143,332 for Affordable Sober Housing in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing (MASH) is involved in several key initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality and safety of sober living environments across the state. Notably, MASH administers the Fire Sprinkler System Program (FSSP), which provides grants of up to $80,000 per home for the installation of fire sprinkler systems in MASH-certified sober homes. This program is essential for helping homes comply with state and local fire safety codes, thereby ensuring a safe living environment for residents. What’s the difference between a sober home and a recovery residence? In Massachusetts, sober homes and recovery residences are different models for substance abuse recovery. Recovery residences —formerly known as halfway houses — are licensed residential treatment programs, while Massachusetts sober homes are peer-led and do not provide treatment.

Through our network of certified sober housing mash certified sober homes and empirically-based recovery principles, MASH’s goal is to help create and foster safe living environments for those with substance use disorders. Sober house certification ensures that sober homes meet high standards of safety, support, and effectiveness, creating an environment conducive to long-term recovery for individuals transitioning from addiction treatment to independent living. Sober house certification in Massachusetts is managed by the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing (MASH), the state affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR).

• At minimum, data collection will protect individual’s identity, be used for continuous quality improvement, be part of day-to-day operations, and regularly reviewed by staff and residents (where appropriate).
• Former BOD officer of Marina Bay Civic Association and several Condominium Associations in the state.
• Verification that furnishings are typical of those in single family homes or apartments as opposed to institutional settings.
• Transition (e.g. entry, phase movement and exit) rituals promote residents’ sense of belonging and confer progressive status and increasing opportunities within the recovery living environment and community.
• A weekly schedule details recovery support services, events and activities.

Tips for selecting a sober house

Mental Health Association, Holyoke, $28,837Grant funds will support renovations to preserve 16 units of sober housing for LGBTQ+ individuals in Holyoke. GAAMHA, Gardner, $100,000Grant funding will support renovations to preserve 12 units of sober housing for women in Gardner. Mental Health Association, Springfield, $11,500 Grant funding will support renovations to preserve 10 units of existing sober housing for women in Springfield.

A list of all sober houses in Massachusetts is available below. Brian Murphy is the owner and operator of Recovery Upfront, a men’s sober home in Weymouth established in 2007. He also previously co-owned and operated two male sober homes in Quincy, and he is currently the owner and operator of BFM Painters and Home Renovators, a commercial and residential paint contracting business in Quincy. Prior to establishing his own business, Brian worked in various management positions at a contract engineering company in Boston and Los Angeles. He has served on the MASH Board of Directors since the organization’s inception in 2007.
